Steel towers scrape the sky. Electric lights glow long after midnight. The name of Rekenber Corporation shines across polished glass like a promise — progress, innovation, prosperity.
From a distance, it looks perfect. Up close, it feels different.
In the slums, people lock their doors early. They speak in low voices about recruitment letters delivered without signatures. About loved ones who left for “opportunity” and returned only in rumors. About shadows moving behind laboratory glass.
Some say the chosen are given a second chance at greatness. Others say they are never seen again.
Deep underground, past locked steel doors and coded elevators, something breathes in the dark. Not quite human. Not entirely monster. A creation stitched together from brilliance and desperation.
And tonight, as the fog rolls between the towers, the lights of Lighthalzen flicker — just for a second.
As if the city itself is afraid of what it has made.
